Sort values in custom display types

When I create a custom display type using a dropdown list and populate the list of values to be displayed, the a values are displayed in the order they are added.  They are not automatically sorted, and there is no way to manually re-arrange the values in the list. 

The values in the list should be automatically sorted alphanumerically.
